The Gazette has received an email from Suzanne Kelly Deputy Tax Collector/Town Clerk addressed to Dylan Fisher the Monadnock Ledger Report covering Mason. We debated whether to edit it and whether it would unneccessarily add to an already inflammatory situation. We again hope that the events described are a misunderstanding. But even public officials have a right to criticize performance of their government, so here is the email in it’s original form.
The last paragraph is a reference to a June 17 91-A request made by the Ledger to obtain documents confirming references previously made by the town clerk at a public meeting. Further background on that can be found here and here.
This makes us so mad I had to let you know.
I just spoke with one of the highway workers here in town. He is our highest trained EMT and was just scolded by one of the selectmen for going on two med calls (one of which saved an infant’s life). He was told he was hired to work on the roads and if he goes on a call he will not be paid. This applies to another highway worker (EMT) as well.
This is infuriating. The selectmen, in their penny pinching ideology, have put the bottom line over the safety of our residents. It has always been the (unstated) policy until now to allow our very few trained EMTs/firemen, who are town employees, to leave on emergency calls. Who else better to go than the people who are available and in town?
He was also told (and I’m paraphrasing) “that we already got rid of two people up town, we can get rid of you, too.”
So, the beat goes on. I also want to let you know that the selectmen are planning to charge your paper for all the copies, redacting, and time it takes to get you those emails. This could be a few hundred dollars give or take. Give Barb a call sometime.
