People About Town

On our frequent jaunts into Mason’s wilderness areas, we recently met a white bearded person traveling on snow shoes He knew us and looked familar, but we couldn’t immediately place him (not that that phenomenon is unusual for us, but in this case we should have been a little quicker on the uptake).

Turns out it was Bruce Berry, who is currently Amherst public works director (road agent) and for a considerable amount of time used to be fire chief and assistant road agent in Mason. We got to talking about this that and the other and Bruce mentioned Amherst is an SB2 town and he has learned to make do with what the voters give him.

There was some mention of a lot of last minute “uninformed SB2 voters”, but I mentioned that they might be folks that were perfectly happy except when it comes time to raise their taxes. While probably not agreeing, Bruce saw some wisdom in that idea.

As an aside, the Town of Amherst maintains an extensive web site. So for example if you wish to know the plan for future Amherst road improvements, one can look here. Mason’s web site is still in its infancy, but we have hopes of it filling in eventually.

This article has been modified to include a picture of Mr. Berry whom we encountered again on a different trail in Mason. This 2014-01-19 photo was taken on Mason’s Railroad Trail, close to Pratt Pond
